They scare the life out of me, to be completely honest with you. Our 3 year old has them almost every night.
Last night, though, he changed. He walked. In his sleep. All the way down the stairs, through the lounge, through the dining room, through the kitchen and into the playroom where I was singing my head off whilst sorting out my "to bre read" pile. He stood there at the door smiling, freakily! I said hi and he replied "hello Mummy" in some weird, Chucky-type voice. I asked what he was doing and he replied "watching you" in same scary voice. I picked him up and carried him back to bed. Thankfully, he didn't do anything else last night.
Usually, about 2-3 hours after we put him to bed, we hear this frightening wail. It's like an air raid siren as it starts quiet and builds to a very loud, high-pitched scream. When one of us has raced to get to him, shh-ing all the way up the stairs in the dire hope he doesn't wake our daughter up, he is sitting up and shaking. We lie him down and stroke his hair but it's as if he doesn't know us or know we're there as sometimes he carries on crying for a while longer.
I know he'll probably have them for a while but they only started 3 months ago. Does anyone else have children who have /have had them? Any suggestions? They upset us more than him, which is a good thing in one way, but would like him to have a settled night.
We keep him cool and he is fine with the dark as has firmly told us he doesn't want his nightlight on. Bedtime has a routine of bath, story, prayers then cuddle and bed. I'm running out of ideas.

Hi! I just found you though a mutual Tweeting friend.
I don't have any suggestions other than don't worry and just wait it out. But you sure brought back some memories. At about 3 years, our now 30 year old son would fall asleep on the sofa. When we'd get him up to go to bed, he'd jump up, clutch his fists, grit his teeth with a big grimace, growl, stamp his feet over and over like he was standing on hot coals and run through the rooms of the house. Then it'd suddenly be over and he'd calmly go to bed. Never waking, never remembering a thing. Scared us to death the first time or two, but it became a regular thing. I don't remember how long it took him to outgrow it, but outgrow it he did.
Thanks for your comment, Wanda. That would've scared the life out of me! Will have to wait it out, I guess.
Jeez…It is very scary. I don't have any suggestions but I hope he'll come out of it soon.
